Collections of the Lithuanian Sea Museum

The collections of the Lithuanian Sea Museum reflect the diversity of the animal species of the World Ocean and the Baltic Sea, the history of Lithuania as a maritime country, seafaring and navigation, the fishing traditions of the Lithuanian seaside and the Curonian Lagoon, and at last but not least the heritage and the present of marine culture. The collections include a variety of exhibits, from buttons of seamen’s uniforms to ships, from postage stamps to sea charts, from tiny mollusc shells to a huge stuffed sea turtle.

Preserved in the Museum collections there are more than 85 thousand exhibits, which are grouped into:

  • collections related to the history of navigation (historical boats, old fishing vessels, anchors, ship models, personal archives handed over to the Sea Museum);
  • collections of marine fauna (corals, shells, crustaceans, echinoderms, fish species, birds, turtles and mammals);
  • living exhibits (Lithuanian freshwater fish, Baltic Sea fish, fish of the tropical seas, sturgeons, birds (penguins), mammals (Steller’s sea lions, Californian sea lions, seals, Black Sea bottle-nosed dolphins)).
