Collection of Photography

Photography is the most numerous collection of the Museum which, at the end of 2015, counted 25213exhibits. The photographic documents among other include photos, originals and reproductions of negatives and slides, digital documents from scientific archive and auxiliary collection. Started in 1971, the collection has been focusing on the topics of fauna of the Baltic Sea and the global ocean, navigation and shipping history of Lithuania, fishing in the Curonian Lagoon and along the Lithuanian coastline, life of fishermen, the Nerija Fort, history of the Lithuanian Sea Museum. The collection treasures works by famous photographers BernardasAleknavicius (1938), Gotfrid Tapinas (1946), Savelijus Golubevas (1935–2007), Vytautas Karaciejus (1948), Algimantas Kalvaitis (1957). 

The exhibits of the collection are widely used for dissemination purpose of the maritime culture and natural heritage when arranging temporary and permanent exhibitions or in the Museum’s publications. To maintain better public access to the Museum‘s collections, the exhibits are being digitized, exchanged among the museums. Since 2014, the Museum has been creating its photo data base in the LIMIS, while the digitized negatives have been stored in the photo library of the scientific-technical archive since 2010.

Refund Request

Lithuanian Sea Museum, which consists of Aquarium, Navigation History Exhibitions, Dolphinarium, Baltic Sea Animal Rehabilitation Centre, and Dolphin Assisted Therapy Centre, is situated on the Curonian Spit. To get to us, take a passenger ferry from Old Ferry Terminal or vehicle ferry from New Ferry Terminal (www.keltas.lt), or a private boat to cross the Curonian Lagoon.

We strongly recommend arriving to Smiltynė by passenger ferry from Old Ferry Terminal (Danės Str. 1, Klaipėda) during summer season peak and especially on rainy days. Private boats going from the Dane River to the Dolphinarium is an option, as well.
The distance from the passenger ferry to the Lithuanian Sea Museum is 1,8 kilometre (20 minutes on foot). You can also take a shuttle train (service is charged), which goes according to the ferry timetable. 

To arrive to the Museum by car, take a New Ferry Terminal (Nemuno Str. 8, Klaipėda). The distance from the vehicle ferry to the Museum is 8 kilometres. Note, that New Ferry Terminal is often jammed during summer season peak and all the parking lots are overcrowded in Smiltynė.

Please, be aware, that tickets to a dolphin performance are not refunded or exchanged, so we strongly recommend to estimate the time of arrival. We advise to skip queues and buy tickets online www.ljm.lt having arrived at the Museum. Visitors coming from Neringa resorts should consider the warning, as well.
