The Baltic Sea Animal Rehabilitation Centre

In cooperation with You and responsible companies, the Lithuanian Sea Museum is developing an ambitious project, the implementation of which will result in more opportunities for contribution to the well-being of the Baltic Sea animals and its entire ecosystem.
The Baltic Sea Animal Rehabilitation Centre is important not only for Lithuania, but also for other countries which have access to the Baltic Sea. The goal of the Centre is to nurse and treat seals and birds that suffered from human’s activities. The centre aims to create a system for investigation and rescue of marine animals while meeting modern scientific and practical standards, to carry out biological investigations of animals and to promote education for common society.

What is the Baltic Sea Animal Rehabilitation Centre needed for?
Every year, more than 20 abandoned baby seals, injured Baltic Sea seals and birds are found on the seacoast of Lithuania. Injured, sick seals or lost baby seals are treated at the Lithuanian Sea Museum and, after becoming stronger, they are released back into the Baltic Sea. A hospital of seals, other animals of the Baltic Sea, the Baltic Sea Rehabilitation Centre, will become an additional division of the Lithuanian Sea Museum complex.

Project value: EUR 2,982,648.19. The project is funded by the financial means of the European Union Cohesion Fund (EUR 1,922,100.00) and the Lithuanian Sea Museum (EUR 1,060,548.19). The funding is allocated in compliance with the Minister’s of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania order No. D1-1007 issued on 29 November 2018, “On Allocating Funding for the Project No. 05.3.1-APVA-V-011-01-0003”. Additionally, the Lithuanian Sea Museum will allocate EUR 125,016.44 for the repair of Smiltynės street, which is part of the technical project.

The following activities are projected:
• Construction of the object. The following premises are projected to be arranged: reception area, operating and procedure rooms, medical room, dissection room, refrigerator for the remains of animals, room for primary clinical examination, intensive therapy and quarantine enclosures with small pools, pools for baby seals gaining weight, adaptation pool, outdoor pool for seabirds, deep indoor diving pool for birds.
• Purchase of veterinary equipment and specialised furniture for treatment purposes.
Overall area of the building is 955 sq. m, area of water pools is 320 sq. m.

Lithuanian Sea Museum, which consists of Aquarium, Navigation History Exhibitions, Dolphinarium, Baltic Sea Animal Rehabilitation Centre, and Dolphin Assisted Therapy Centre, is situated on the Curonian Spit. To get to us, take a passenger ferry from Old Ferry Terminal or vehicle ferry from New Ferry Terminal (www.keltas.lt), or a private boat to cross the Curonian Lagoon.

We strongly recommend arriving to Smiltynė by passenger ferry from Old Ferry Terminal (Danės Str. 1, Klaipėda) during summer season peak and especially on rainy days. Private boats going from the Dane River to the Dolphinarium is an option, as well.
The distance from the passenger ferry to the Lithuanian Sea Museum is 1,8 kilometre (20 minutes on foot). You can also take a shuttle train (service is charged), which goes according to the ferry timetable.

To arrive to the Museum by car, take a New Ferry Terminal (Nemuno Str. 8, Klaipėda). The distance from the vehicle ferry to the Museum is 8 kilometres. Note, that New Ferry Terminal is often jammed during summer season peak and all the parking lots are overcrowded in Smiltynė.

Please, be aware, that tickets to a dolphin performance are not refunded or exchanged, so we strongly recommend to estimate the time of arrival. We advise to skip queues and buy tickets online www.ljm.lt having arrived at the Museum. Visitors coming from Neringa resorts should consider the warning, as well.

Parking around the Lithuanian Sea Museum and all the Smiltynė is charged during 1 May – 15 September. Parking rates
Click to find information about occupancy of parking lots in Smiltynė.
